Intent
At East Rainton Primary school, Art and Design aims to inspire our children to develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own pieces of art. Our curriculum is designed to give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas about the world as well as learning about art and artists from across the world, from different cultures and traditions and through history.
To support the delivery of our curriculum we use the Kapow Primary Art and Design scheme which should enable our children to reach the end of Key Stage attainment targets in line with the National Curriculum. We chose Kapow Primary as it is a partner of Artsmark which further supports our ongoing Artsmark journey.
Art and Design is taught for the first half of each half term and alternates with Design and Technology. As a school, we believe this approach ensures the developing knowledge and skills learnt are transferred across the whole curriculum and makes the best use of our timetable.
One of the aims of using Kapow’s Primary scheme is to identify ways to adapt the curriculum to meet the specific needs of our children, school and area as we progress through the cycles.
Implementation
At East Rainton Primary, we use Kapow Primary’s Art and Design scheme to support our delivery. The Kapow Art and Design scheme of work is designed with four strands that run throughout our two cycles:
- Generating ideas
- Using sketchbooks
- Making skills, including the formal elements of art (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern and colour)
- Knowledge of artists
- Evaluating and analysing
The units of lessons allow our children to build upon their skills and knowledge and applying them to a range of projects. The formal elements are also woven throughout the units. Key skills are regularly revisited with increasing complexity using a spiral curriculum model. Units in year group are organised into four core areas:
- Drawing
- Painting and mixed media
- Sculpture and 3D
- Craft and design
The units of Kapow Primary’s Art and design support age-appropriate sequenced learning and can be used in cross curricular activities across the school. Creativity and independent learning are embedded within the curriculum which enables the children to create their own unique pieces of art.
Each lesson is very practical and encourages experimental and exploratory learning using sketchbooks to document their ideas. Lessons can be accessed by all pupils and there are opportunities to stretch children’s learning when required. Knowledge organisers are used to support eh delivery of the units of lessons which also encourage recall of skill processes, key facts and vocabulary.
Kapow’s scheme also support the CPD of teachers by including multiple teacher videos to develop their skills and knowledge before teaching them to a high standard and ensuring that each child makes progression.
Art and design are taught for 1.5 hrs each week over a half term which alternates with Design and technology. We run the scheme over a two-year cycle as this ensures all units are taught thoroughly. As a school, we felt this approach afforded staff the opportunity to have enough time to fully appreciate and embed the learning from each unit.
Staff have access to an Art cupboard as well as individual art trollies in their classroom which include all the resources needed for their projects. There is a robust system is in place to manage the replenishment of resources.
To further supplement our Art and Design curriculum, we also run an Arts and Crafts after school club for children who want to develop their interest further. We also plan to introduce Art Ambassadors which will be a group of children who meet with the subject lead to explore the work of various artists and share their knowledge with their classes and the school.
Impact
At East Rainton Primary, the curriculum scheme we chose to follow is designed in such a way that our children are involved in the evaluation, discussion and decision making about the quality of the projects and the improvements they need or could make. By taking part in these regular discussions and decision-making processes, our children will not only know the facts and key information about art, but they will be able to talk confidently about their own learning and have a growing understanding of where they need to improve.
Our children will be seen enjoying their lessons and asking questions about theirs and others’ pieces of artwork. Our children will use their sketchbook to draw, ask questions, and explore the work of key artists.
The impact of Kapow’s Primary scheme will be monitored through both formative and summative assessment opportunities. Each lesson includes clear lesson objectives as well as an end of term assessment sheet to show if children have met all the objectives and what interventions have been needed to support children with identified gaps in their learning.
At the end of Kapow Primary’s Art and Design scheme, our children should leave primary school equipped with a range of techniques and the confidence and creativity to form a strong foundation for their Art and Design learning at Key Stage 3 and beyond.
We aim that the impact of Kapow Primary Art and Design will enable our children to:
- Produce creative work, exploring and recording their ideas and experiences.
- Be proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using subject-specific language.
- Have knowledge about great artists and the historical and cultural developments of their art.
- Meet the end of key stage expectations outlined in the National Curriculum for Art and Design.

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY
Intent
At East Rainton Primary School, Design and Technology aims to inspire our children to become creative thinkers who have an understanding and appreciation for the process of design starting with initial ideas, creation and prototypes as well as seeking to improve their initial ideas. We want our children to be confident, to take risks when designing and become reflective when evaluating theirs and others’ work. We aim for our children to appreciate the impact of design and technology around them in the real world and how this is constantly changing as technology advances. We want our children to develop the skills and knowledge needed to pursue careers and interests in future design advancements.
To support the delivery of our curriculum we use the Kapow Primary Design and Technology scheme which enables our children to reach the end of Key Stage attainment targets in line with the National Curriculum. We chose Kapow Primary as it is a partner of Artsmark which further supports our ongoing Artsmark journey.
Design and Technology aims to be taught for the first half of each half term and alternates with Art and Design. As a school, we believe this approach ensures the developing knowledge and skills learnt are transferred across the whole curriculum and makes the best us of our timetable.
One of the aims of using Kapow’s Primary scheme, is to identify ways to adapt the curriculum to meet the specific needs of our children, school and area as we progress through the cycles.
Implementation
At East Rainton Primary, we use Kapow Primary’s Design and Technology scheme to support our delivery. Each lesson of the units aims to capture the interest and enthusiasm of our children. The scheme follows the National Curriculum’s three main stages of design, make and evaluate. Each of the lessons are underpinned with the technical knowledge which encompasses contextual, historical and technical understanding required for each strand. Cooking and nutrition lessons are taught as a separate section where there is a focus on specific principles, skills and techniques in food including where food comes from, diet and seasonality. The five key strands are:
- Design
- Make
- Evaluate
- Technical knowledge
- Cooking and nutrition
Kapow Primary’s Design and Technology scheme has a clear progression of skills and knowledge within these five strands across each year group.
Design and Technology is taught every half term alternatively with art and Design. It is delivered over a two-year cycle to ensure that all skills and knowledge are delivered to all our year groups. Each lesson is approximately 1.5hours long per week with added time when need to complete projects. Skills and knowledge taught in Design and Technology are referred to across other curriculum subjects.
Within these two cycles, our children respond to design briefs and scenarios that require the consideration of the needs of others and aim to develop their skills in six key areas:
- Mechanisms
- Structures
- Textiles
- Cooking and nutrition
- Electrical systems (KS2)
- Digital world (KS2)
The Kapow Primary scheme is a spiral scheme where key areas are revisited and repeated with an increased complexity allowing our children to build upon their previous knowledge. Each lesson incorporates a range of teaching strategies to support the differing learning styles of our children. Lessons can be differentiated to stretch the more able children as well as allow a fully accessible resource for all children irrespective of their individual needs. Knowledge organisers are used to support the delivery of each unit which also helps the consolidation of new learning.
Kapow Primary’s scheme includes teacher videos for each unit which support staffs’ CPD and allows them to see how the project is executed step by step before teaching to the children in their class. This ensures that lessons are delivered to a high standard that ensures progression for all children.
Staff have access to a subject-specific cupboards which include all the clearly labelled resources needed for the projects and a robust system is in place to manage the replenishment of resources.
Impact
The impact of Kapow’s Primary scheme will be monitored through both formative and summative assessment opportunities. Each lesson includes clear lesson objectives as well as quizzes and knowledge catchers which can be used at the end of a unit.
Teachers and the subject leader will meet regularly to identify any children which may have gaps in their knowledge and together will produce a plan to support the child/children further.
At the end of Kapow Primary, we envisage that our children will have the skills and knowledge that will equip them to succeed in their secondary education and become a innotative and resourceful member of society.
Our children will be seen enjoying their lessons and asking questions about theirs and others’ designs, products and improvements for future designs. Our children will use their sketchbook to draw designs, ask questions, make changes and rethink their designs and note down the future changes they could make if they were to repeat the project.
We aim that the impact of Kapow Primary will:
- Understand the functional and aesthetics properties of materials
- Understand how to use and combine a range a tools to carry out different processes for shaping, manufacturing and products.
- Build and apply a range of skills, knowledge and understanding to produce high quality outcomes including models and outcomes, prototypes, CAD and products to fulfil the needs of users, clients and scenarios.
- Understand and apply the principles for healthy eating, diets and recipes including key processes, food groups and cooking equipment.
- Have an appreciation for key individuals, inventions, and events in history and of today that impact our world.
- Recognise where our decisions can impact the wider world in terms of community, social and environmental issues.
- Self-evaluate and reflect on learning at different stages and identify areas to improve.
- Meet the end of Key Stage expectations outlined in the National Curriculum for design and Technology and computing.
