Physical Education – Intention, Implementation and Impact.

Intent

PE is instrumental in promoting health and wellbeing in young children. We provide opportunities for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and we teach children the importance of leading healthy, active lives and making informed and appropriate lifestyle choices. At East Rainton Primary School, we believe that PE should promote the development of key skills and participation in a variety of games, activities and sports. We provide a safe and supportive environment for all children to flourish in a range of different physical activities and encourage their physical, emotional, social and moral development. Children participate in competitive sport and through this we teach children how to cooperate and collaborate effectively as part of a team and compete appropriately against others, adhering to the principles of fairness, sportsmanship and respect, values we hope to embed for future life. Swimming is an important life skill and we aspire for all children to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25 metres.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum is varied and we have developed long-term plans to ensure that all National Curriculum objectives are covered. All pupils receive two hours of high quality PE per week. PE in each year group is sequenced precisely to ensure progression of knowledge and skills and also to ensure that children have the opportunity to experience a wide range of sports during their time in our school. We have successfully integrated inter and intra sports competitions into the school year, which gives children the opportunity to showcase their skills and enjoy the competitive nature of the sports. In our school, we celebrate our competitions being inclusive and we ensure that all children are involved. Physical Education is fundamental in developing healthy lifestyles in young people and we are passionate about providing children with a wide range of opportunities to develop this. The importance of sport and being physically active in school is continually encouraged by our Sports Leaders. These children are responsible for initiating ideas and activities, being a positive role model and encouraging all pupils to get involved in physical activity. This has allowed children to develop their leadership and communication skills. All children have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular sports activities throughout the year. We offer a residential experience for children in Years 5 and 6 each year.

Impact

In our school, we motivate children to participate in a range of sports which are fun, engaging and help children to develop a range of skills. We encourage children to apply these skills and their knowledge during PE lessons, but we also provide children with the confidence to apply these skills to many different life experiences such as, respect of self and others, team building skills, and critical and creative thinking. We motivate children to take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing, inspiring children to lead a happy and healthy life. We have achieved Gold in both the Active Schools Charter and School Games Mark in recognition of our PE provision and children’s access to competitive sports, which the school has maintained since 2015.
