We have been listening to stories, writing stories and looking for our favourite characters hidden in the classroom. We chose our favourite books and Yr6 came to read with us. We’ve had a lovely day.
Class 2 Visited The Discovery Museum, Newcastle.
We learned more about George & Robert Stephenson, then designed, built and raced air powered trains. After our packed lunch we explored the museum and found some activities which really made us think, we used our skills to solve problems.
The choir performed at St. Cuthbert’s Church Crib service on Tuesday 3rd December. They performed Let It Snow, Silent Night (in both English and German) and finally Must Be Santa. They all sang beautifully – well done everyone!
This term, Year 4 and 5 have been exploring natural resources in Britain. They have found out about how we make energy from coal and gas and have discussed the problems with using these non-renewable resources. They have also explored the natural resource, wood, and where the different types of wood come from and why we import lots of our wood into Britain. Within our study of wood, we considered how paper was made and we were all shocked to find out how much our country uses in one year.
We visited Miss Exley and Year 3 to find out how they had made their own paper from recycled paper in school. Year 3 were able to explain the process of paper-making and they described the steps needed to complete the task. They showed Year 4 and 5 their paper and explained what else they would need to make the paper smoother. Year 4 and 5 were even able to keep some of the paper year 3 had made.
Year 5 and 6 have been designing and making Anderson Shelters as part of their DT this half term. They have learnt how to cut wood accurately, use nails, screws and drills as well as preparing wood for joining. The children have had great fun designing a prototype model of their shelter before making them with wood and corrugated cardboard in a small group. We are looking forward to seeing the final product. Well done Class 5!

Our school piano has had a makeover from all the children in the school, with the help of local artist Kerry Cook. Every child contributed and added a piece of work to the collage. Well done to everyone who took part!
As part of the Houghton Feast festival, all the schools who took part in the opening ceremony were invited to take part in a singing festival at Hetton Methodist Church. The choir sang two of their own songs and then two with the other 6 schools. Thank you to everyone who came to support the choir. The choir had a fabulous time!
The children across KS2 all has the opportunity to try out some brass instruments with Mr Hamilton to see if they would like to learn to play. Many of the children loved the idea of playing a brass instrument.
The addition of brass instruments to our music tuition classes has proven very popular. The children are loving the opportunity to play some lovely instruments. Currently we have two groups having lessons on a Wednesday(a tenor horn group and a cornet group) however Sunderland Music Hub have be kind enough to buy us some further instruments so we can start another group very soon. During the last week of half term, I was able to pop into the lessons and was very surprised as to how much the children can play already. They are obviously practising hard-well done!
